REVIEW: ROBOTECH #2

Robotech #2 is the very exciting second issue from the new ongoing series by Titan Comics. It’s written by Brian Wood, with art done by Marco Turini. It is available on Comixology now.

In my last review I spent some time talking about the uber-popular intellectual property known as ROBOTECH, and by now everyone who has ever wanted to read my last review should have done so by now. Therefore, I will pick up where I left off.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Ten years ago, a massive ship crashed on Macross Island in the South Pacific. In the intervening years, the people of Earth have used the ‘Robotechnology’ from the ship to significantly advance their own technology.

On the launch day of Earth’s Super-Dimension Fortress One (the SDF-1), Earth is attacked by mysterious ships which appear in space and deadly ‘Battlepods’ are dispatched…

Talented young pilot Rick Hunter has been caught up in the events and has taken a Veritech ship (an advanced fighter jet enhanced by Robotechnology). After meeting a girl named Minmei, the pair come face to face with a giant alien being…

In actuality the resolution to the synopsis occurs within the first couple pages of the book. The rest is pretty cool.

I don’t really want to get too heavy into spoilers, but this issue sets up a lot of the conflict that I imagine is going to take place in this series.

So the aliens and the humans are at a stand still. The aliens want to battle the humans because they have Robotechnology in their position, but they mock the humans because they don’t know the potential of it.

The humans are confused as ever, and surmise that the aliens are toying with them. So they do some fancy science fiction space warp jump, and find themselves in a dire situation afterwards.

There wasn’t a lot of character development in this story. However, the motivation behind the aliens was slightly touched upon.

I have never seen the original Robotech series. I’m still only acquainted with Voltron on Netflix, and Transformers thanks to Michael Bay.

I think it would be cool to see Voltron vs. Transformers vs. Robotech. We can call it the battle of the bots!

I really enjoyed the writing and the art in this issue, and I hope this series continues to be as great as it is. I think this is the right way to reboot a franchise, and I am excited to see where it goes.

I give this 10 out of 10 capes. Yes, it was that great.
